Waiting for Marriage is Sweeter than Marriage Itself!

I cannot properly express how happy I felt, the day my husband proposed to me. In our community, fifteen years back, bride and groom were not allowed to meet each other before marriage. The groom would carefully browse through the local jeweller's diamond engagement rings for something special for his partner. All very traditional and romantic.

I asked my father to get me a photograph of my fiancé. When he gave me the photo, I kept it inside a cover, I felt too shy to open it in front of him. I took it inside the bathroom to have a view. If I think of those feelings, it appears to be funny even now. My groom used to call me on the phone. No cell phones then, just landlines. The landline phone was kept in the hall. So, he used to give me a signal. Just giving a phone ring twice and calling after few minutes is our accepted code. Then I should come and attend the phone when nobody else was there. A week before my marriage, my mother found this out and forbade me to talk to him before the marriage. So perhaps you can see now how very thrilling it was to wait for the marriage. I told my husband, I could not wait any longer! For that he made fun of me saying, “Tear off two sheets of the calendar in that case.” - he had, and has, such a lovely way with words.
